Step 2 – Open the Motor Can

You will notice that the can is crudely, but ‘permanently’, sealed by a crushed metal fit at both ends. To open it up we are going to work on the end with the pinion gear on. Get the Dremel out with a small cutting disk, and carefully cut slots where the metal has been split.

Make sure that the motor can is secured in a vice and cut little slits to release the front cover

You want to make a total of eight small cuts as shown by the arrows.

After that small spate of grinding it should be quite easy to lift the cover off.  The armature will come out as well. It might be convenient to pull the pinion gear to lift it out.  If both the magnets are loose, it is likely they will come out too.

The permanent magnets should be stuck to the inside of the motor can and not come out when you pull the armature out.
Your old magnets might be in a bad way like this.
