Sewing Machine to Scroll Saw

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

After a week of getting frustrated waiting for my source of seasoned oak to come through, I have been up to some other jazz, helping Sam with the ‘cubby-under-the-stairs shoe draws’, and doing a scroll saw to sewing machine conversion experiment. Having had this old sewing machine sitting about for several years collecting dust (we […]

Making a Breakfast Bowl with the DIY Lathe

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Here’s a bowl turning video for you. This one documents the use of the lathe to turn a nice little laburnum wood breakfast bowl for my mother-in-law. It isn’t mega fancy, but is a bowl that actually gets used for cereal on a daily basis :) It is mounted on a faceplate for turning, hope […]

Video Tour of a Lathe

Monday, November 16th, 2009

This is the first Flowering Elbow video! Making it was strangely like giving a presentation to lost of people (a tad nerve-racking). It is a little tour of the wood lathe project, that is documented step-by-step style here. More vids of turning in action to come…

French Windows / Doors

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Binding my PhD Thesis

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

The Binding of my PhD Thesis Unfortunately, and in typical style, I had no time to take photos of the two copies that I bound and handed in for examination (this was of course done the night before the deadline).  The one here, is my own copy, which is substandard in every way – the […]

Pillar Drill Modding (Part2)

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

With the drill up and running now (see my last post), I have been making some hold down clamps.     It cuts wonderfully through steel, on a nice slow consistent speed. In the photo below I am using the hold down (drilled and tapped with the new drill press) to secure a van part that […]

Pillar Drill Modding

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

have been in the process of renovating a pillar drill for a while now (PhD work kept getting in the way). I thought I would share some of this drill press jazz.

The idea was that by getting a second hand three phase drill, it is possible to get a really high quality and functional machine, if you are willing and able to convert it to run off single phase electricity supply.
